Wildflower Long Course 2013

Wow I can’t believe it has been a year since my first Wildflower. 2012 marked my first ever Olympic distance triathlon. People told me last year that I picked a good one for my first as it was both challenging and rewarding and it proved to be both. My coach/husband told me right after my finish in 2012 that I should think about making Wildflower my first Long Course in 2013. I just about hit him as I didn’t think I would ever be ready for a 70.3. My mind just couldn’t stretch that far at that moment. I told him NO WAY! I’m not doing it. He didn’t mention it again until January of 2013 and I said no again. Little did I know that he had secretly signed me up for Long Course. When he told me about that I still said no but he told me to just train for it and if I wasn’t ready I could always change to Olympic distance the week prior to the race. I raced Staford Treeathlon Sprint the week before Wildflower and place 1st overall but more importantly I met some members of Phil Am triclub  that really encouraged me to do Long Course as some of them were actually doing both! I still wasn’t sure. I had the opportunity to ride with Julie Moss and Tim (don’t know your last name} on the Wednesday prior to race day and they really encouraged me to just race the long course as they felt I was very strong on the bike and could make it through the run so I could finish. I really prayed about my decision but on Wednesday night I told my husband/coach I was just going to do it. I was nervous all week leading up to the race and ate a extra large steak and potato the night before. Race day morning I was up at 6 am and had breakfast consisting of Beachbody shakeology blended with peanut butter, banana and oatmeal. I headed down to transition at 7 am and joined my husband/coach and 5 year old son to watch the pros and early waves head out. It wasn’t long and it was my turn! With my pre race shot of Vitargo I hit the swim with everything that I had and felt strong throughout. I was out of the water at 32:33 which was 17th in my wave of under 30’s. Onto my strength on the bike my I was no longer nervous. I had a good transition and was out on the bike with many racers to pass. The ride was a blur. I passed more than I could remember to count and received many kudos from competitors along the way. Thanks iRT Wheels for the deep dish wheel set I felt very fast! Around the lake and up Nasty Grade and into transition I wasn’t sure what place I was in but finished the bike in a respectable 2:58:58. Now came my biggest question mark. The run. I had never raced any distance farther that 6.2 miles and had only ran/jogged 13.1 one time in my life and it was at about a 11 minute pace. Everyone told me that I would be walking many parts of the course as it would be hot and very difficult terrain. I did NOT walk. I kept my head down and put one foot ahead of the other. Before I new it the finish line was before me. 1.54::54!  As I crossed I was so happy to just finish. As the awards ceremony came around the computer showed that I was 2nd in my age group and I was shocked and happy. Later the next day the results were updated and the system showed that the first place finisher didn’t finish and I was awarded 1st place. I am a Wildflower CHAMPION!!
